I was here for breakfast with my grandma who has problems walking. I want to Thank Roberto the dishwasher/bus boy for helping us and being so so Kind. I order a typical breakfast plate with 2 eggs, 2 sausage, potatoes and wheat toast for $7.25. It was great. It's a Mom&Pop place and I always drive by but this is the first time I ate here. The service was good. The coffee continued to pour without having to ask :)

I came here once with my friend. It is a pretty run down restaurant. Inside is very dark. I would compare the menu and food quality to Denny's just more expensive and better service. I ordered of the breakfast menu and got an omelette with bacon, cheese, and sausages. It came very moist, maybe too moist because I thought it was a little undercooked. The hashbrowns here are decent though. Lightly seasoned it with salt and pepper. Overall its a decent place, I probably wouldn't return, since its was awkwardly dark and quiet.

DO NOT GO HERE! I'm shocked this place still exist for so long. Walked in with no greeting, but later on was greet by an old tiny lady. The dining area smells like urine. At the front register, they put random dishes and plates inside the glass counter, WITH DUST! With the interior and dining condition, don't need to say more about their foods. Came with my girlfriend one afternoon, we ordered their so-called famous pastrami dips, famous? Not at all. It was bland bread wrapped around some cold meat. We also ordered the chili cheese fries, no flavor and taste watery. Don't waste your money here. Go down the block to other burger's joint, its way better dining experience.

Old school restaurant open since 1946. I ordered four lunch specials which included two pastrami and two Reuben sandwiches and each came with french fries. Three of these orders were for coworkers. I tried half of the pastrami and half of the Reuben sandwich and by far the Reuben was the best. The fries were okay, no big deal, but the Reuben received rave reviews back at the office when my coworkers took their first bite. I didn't give the restaurant 5 stars because the fries were okay and they only give you a little bit.

Came in and was greeted right away. Always a good thing. Waitress was on top of her game with the drinks. Ordered the Spencer Steak sandwich medium rare and that is exactly how it came out. Very tender. Fries were on point. Crispy enough but not too hard. Left very full and satisfied.

I am surprised that not more people mentioned that this was featured in LAWeekly. laweekly.com/squidink/20… Came here for Brunch and surprisingly, not everything was greasy. Our server was a nice Asian lady who also brought up that their French dip was featured in a magazine. She exaggerated that it was rated better than Philippe's. I still opted for eggs and hash browns though and my husband the corned beef hash. Not bad, we'll have to come back for the French dip next time.

Jolly Jug is the epitome of good ol' fashioned diner. It's sitting on the busy Peck Rd. around a hefty mixture of other diners, Asian restaurants, and Mexican restaurants. The menu and the portions are equally as huge here. To keep it classic while completely blowing out my calorie count, I went with the corn beef and cole slaw sandwich and a side of chili cheese fries. The fresh cole slaw was great, and so was the corn beef! The staff is very friendly here and the food comes out fast and hot. The prices are all reasonable and you're guaranteed to leave with a full stomach!

This place has cheap drinks, pretty good food considering what you pay for and large portions. Don't know if I will ever be back for the food, but will most likely return with the family for drinks at the bar.

The food was surprisingly amazing! I ordered the pastrami and turkey club (I highly recommend the garlic ranch on the side to dip the fries in) and my friends ordered the beef and pork dip... We all loved it. The service was excellent. The owner even came by to check on us. We will def be back! Even the bartender was super sweet and helpful. Cool place, great food, good jams!

Bartender charged me someone else's tab. She was so rude. I have been coming here for over 15yrs and they just lost my business and that of all the people I know. Tried to resolve issue with owner but she was not very much help. I will let our EM/SEM Chamber of Commerce know. Sad how the bartender tried to screw me over.

If you like tight quarters, old-school stiff cocktails, dim lights (so you can see only what you need to see), red pleather, and a "juke box" that plays gangsta rap then this is the place for you!! In addition to the ambiance, I was really impressed by the way the owner of the jug helped me out as I sought to coordinate a "hosted" happy hour for my colleagues. The food was awesome - gravy!!! Au jus!!!! Fries!!! And of course, the beef dip were phenomenal. It's the people that make this place awesome!! Ill definitely be back :)

This place can be good if you meet up with your friends to grab a few drinks and hang out. Granted, this place isn't in Michelin territory of quality but there is a family feel to this restaurant. If you're a first timer here, I suggest you take a friend who is a regular at the Jug, they would know what's good to eat and drink and remember the servers and bar tenders. By the way-- they do remember regulars :). To me, Jolly Jug is more of a dive bar than restaurant but I guess I see it that way because my father-in-law practically haunts their bar. The only food I've had here was their beef dip and that was about 2-6 months ago. All I remember from that experience was the Jug had a new manager who is a Vietnamese woman (I suspect she is Viet but not entirely sure). Why did I mention she was Vietnamese? The beef in my beef dip had a strong star anise flavor and scent to it, very reminiscent of beef prepped and used in Vietnamese pho soup, lol. I didn't like it. I'm guessing their food has changed, still haven't eaten anything there since that pho style beef dip. The atmosphere can use a lot of updating, the food based on my experience months ago wasn't great, BUT it's like Cheers for some people-- "Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name". They will definitely remember you and give you the time of day unlike some pretentious bars.

So I've lived in El Monte well over a year and I've always been amused by the restaurant's name. (Yes, I am that immature.) For the longest time, my friends and I would occasionally bring it up as a joke, but we always wanted to try the place. Finally, two weeks ago, I decided to finally take the time of my not so busy life and ordered food there. After reading reviews on yelp, I opted for the beef dip sandwich. I took it home and got my Lost episode ready for me to watch, sat back, and took a bite of the dip sandwich, and got lost in it. This sandwich is so savory, especially with their dip, and their cole slaw is as fresh as any can be. I'm honestly not a cole slaw fan, but this one was delicious! I've been to Jolly Jug at least 3 more times since I've had that dip sandwich. So delicious! I personally believe it's better than Phillippe's in LA, but that's because I'm not a fan of spicy, so I don't eat my dip sandwiches there with the spicy mustard, though I hear it's the cherry for their sandwich sundae. Nonetheless, I'm a fan of the place. :) The name of the place ain't fooling ya, I walk outta that restaurant as jolly as Santa Claus on Christmas morning. x)

These kinds of places are fast disappearing from the San Gabriel Valley where almost every restaurant is ethnic (Chinese, Vietnamese, Mexican), fastood (McDonalds, FKC, Jack in the Box), or chains (Dennys, Hometown Buffett, etc.) So a stand alone, small family owned non-any of the above, is a rarity and a treat. That's why it has a local following. There is a tavern there which I have not visited, but is popular with the old timers. Plenty of parking. Lots of nice sandwich selections and you can get a nice Sunday breakfast anytime of the day. Service is impeccable. It's quiet and cozy, and a very nice place to discuss business or your tax returns over lunch. Prices are reasonable.

I went in on a morning and their was nobody.................. besides it being relaxing, I started getting nervous as to how strange the atmosphere was. It was too quiet with no one in sight. Very old fashioned and very out of date. I tried to enjoy my meal (chicken fried steak) but as my eyes wandered about I could only feel, but a cold sense of sadness. The decorations were extremely gloomy, a sad fake flower limped over a cheap vase. Fish swam in a tank in the dining area and I felt like I could smell them in the air. My food was average to say at the very least. The chicken fried steak was small the breading was burned and the sauce on it was yellow. Yes yellow.(unknown substance) (I was not given the option of country gravy) I tried to finish fast so I could leave and I did, the portion was very small. The hash brown was only one potato. The eggs werent cooked well. The service was as if I was barely being tolerated for eating their. I almost felt sorry for walking in and as I left that cold musty dining area, I never looked back and walked away.

Never coming back here again. Me and a group of friends were here last Friday and my friend was short changed by 5 dollars. A pitcher of beer is 12.50 and he only got back 2.50. When my friend approached the bartender about it, the bartender got aggressive and said, "I gave you the correct change, straight up." He slammed his hands on the counter and said, "if you got a problem you can take it over there" and pointed towards the door. We were here to celebrate a friends birthday so we kept quiet after that. Bad customer service and rude. I will not be coming back.

This place was WACK ....They claim to say its all fresh....But the only thing fresh was the air that hit us when we walked out if that place...There pastrami and pickle are plain ugly...tasted horrible ....would never go back...

Great local oldie but goodie. There's ample parking in the parking lot in the back or street parking. Haven't been here since I was a kid but from the inside it seems like nothing has changed! The staff is extremely nice and helpful and of course you partially come for the pickles. If you're a pickle lover and love pairing it with sandwiches this is the place for you. The beef dip on a French roll with gravy au jus was good. From what I remember as a kid it seemed like it was a lot better, but then again my palette has gotten more refined over the years. They do put a twist with the au jus that is more of a gravy. The Mimi was delicious! It was corned beef with coleslaw on a onion roll with French fries on the side. The flavors go together extremely well and for someone who loves coleslaw and corned beef separately, it was a great combination. The corn beef was juicy, the downside was that the coleslaw made the bread soggy quick. The chili fries were done a little differently as well. The chili was more on the saucy side instead. It had a really bold smokey flavor - it had a mix of pinto and kidney beans with green chilies. Overall, our meal was quite pricey for sandwiches. It was good but we could have probably gotten more for $30. When you're ready to pay your bill, you'll need to walk up to the cashier.

Love the Jolly Jug! Good food, good service, good times. Beef Dip = par excel lance. Also, must haves, 'world famous cole slaw' and pickles. I love the Rueben sandwich too! Last time we went was a Friday night, the bar was really going wild, we'll have to come without any minors next time.

2.5 stars. This is more of a local's joint type of place. By no means is this place a trendy, hip spot to take your date to, ambiance is not their strong point. This place is more to just grab a few drinks, unwind with your friends, eat and watch the game. The staff here is always great and super friendly. The food from what I've tried (all sandwiches) have been okay, nothing really special to be honest. Occasionally, well okay, more than occasionally...you'll come across a wasted patron talking out of their ass. It's cool though, because so far they've all been nice... just that they're talking out of their ass.

We went today for the first time in years, but it was not a good experience, the tea was good, and my husband enjoyed the chorizo and eggs. My mom liked her lunch, she liked the Cole slaw. Now comes the bad. I ordered the French dip sandwich, it was awful! the meat was stringy and bland. The Jus looked like urine and tasted funny. and the service was very slow, there was hardly anyone there and the staff looked bored. We were never asked about refills or anything else. We also ordered the onion rings, they weren't worth the price! 4.00 for six rings?? Not worth it! Would come back and give it another try, but will not order the onion rings and french dip sandwich. If you want a great french dip, try LeRoy's in Monrovia, theirs is the best, and you can get a ton of tater tots!

ever driven by local restaurants and wonder if the place is any good and why is it still opened so long?? anyway for my birthday, i had asked my friends to ventured out to different restaurants that we have never been to and ordered something to go and bring it back to my house and just feast! OUR own version of "food crawl" i don't even know how many times i've driven by this restaurant and each time i do, i look through their window to see if there are anyone actually dining in there. got an order of Beef Dip and a Pastrami Dip. The pastrami were thinly sliced and was not sandwiched in rye breads.. it was in crispy baguette. The bread was pretty good, soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. Personally i prefer the pastrami french dip more than the beef french dip. To be honest, both were not impressive. it wasn't "THE BEST in LA" i've had better. maybe the best in "el monte" but even then for the price they charge ($9 each) and the size of the sandwich... i'd rather go to The Hat. It really wasn't worth $9. I've paid $10+ for pastrami sandwiches before but they were HUGE.. the sandwich was REALLY stuffed with juicy and thick slices of pastrami!!! Overall it wasn't good nor bad.... it was just okay. and i have experienced better french dip sandwiches for a more reasonable price but sometimes i do wonder how fresh are their bread and meats? i mean.. i rarely see people in the restaurant.. and i drive by this place EVERYDAY (twice a day!)

This is a neighborhood bar and restaurant. The owner is friendly and comes out and interacts with the guests and offers Chex Mix at the end of the night. Most of the food is fried. They have some Asian food items on the menu. My personal wish would be that they embraced the Asian flare and fried less of their food items.

I love this place, I been here several times and everything I had order before taste really good. Even the drinks are great, I always make sure Diana( the bartender) makes my drinks. She makes them really good and everyone is friendly as well. I love there bloody mary's lol. Give it a try its a whole on the wall but sure worth it.

The hubby and I stumbled upon this place one afternoon--we were hungry and decided to venture in. As soon as we stepped inside we were immediately transported back to 1972 or thereabouts. I thought to myself, "This is either going to be really bad or really good!" The service was friendly, warm, and welcoming. I asked the owner, "What's good?" so she brought out the roast beef sandwhich with a gravy-like au jus. YUMMERS!!! The meat was flavorful, juicy, and moist but not fatty or greasy or salty. Hubby liked his lunch too, I suppose, since he inhaled it all before I could try to sneak a bite or two. The owner was so cute too...as she dropped of the check, she laughed and told us that this was her favorite part!

Love the Jolly Jug. I usually get the breakfast which is served all day. I've been served by 3 different waiters or waitresses and they've all been really friendly and attentive. The decor is definitely old-school and there are many regulars which adds to its charm. It's true, it is a bit on the expensive side especially for El Monte. But I always come back since it feels like a second home and the wait staff and owners don't mind if I sit around for hours catching up on my reading, the waiter or waitress always asking if I want a refill. Also, if you don't like the sandwich dip, they offer au jus (it's not mentioned on the menu).

I can't believe it took me so long to write a review for Jolly Jug. A little background on this place. From what I learned from the owner of Jolly Jug that about 1946 a woman who moved out west from New York opened Jolly Jug. She owned it and ran it until about 1996 and wanted to retire. Margaret, who is the owner, bought Jolly Jug from this transplanted Jewish New Yorker lady. Margaret tells me she kept the menu the same and all the recipes, with the exception of adding a few new items but more on that later. I might be off on my dates but I think I am right and if I am wrong it's only by a year or two. So Margaret is originally from Hong Kong but she moved here along with her brother David and other family members years ago. I think around 1967. Margaret's brother David works at JJ on the weekends. David is an engineer of sorts at a major defense contractor so he only helps out on his days off which is the weekends. Margaret added a couple of things to the menu that were not originally on the menu. She added one or two Chinese items I believe and maybe a Mexican dish but for the most part the menu is the same from right after the close of WWII. Also she gives fortune cookies to you after your meal like in a Chinese restaurant. I think she told me she started doing that one Christmas and intended it for Christmas only but was such a hit that she decided to keep on doing that. Margaret and David are good people. Both are very funny. They both have great personalities and have great sense of humors. You get great conversations with them during the course of your visit there. The other waiters and waitresses are very nice as well. The bar tender, unfortunately forgot his name, is very cool. I don't drink alcohol so I am not a bar goer but sometimes the bartender serves food and waits tables if they are short on help. He's good to talk to do. The way we stumbled upon JJ is that my wife's dad has some social gathering in El Monte on a regular basis. So at times we'll go to his club and watch him sing when they have a talent show. After seeing JJ for a few times I was curious about what it is and how it is. Checked Yelp! and Chowhound reviews and reading the great reviews we had to try it. We did and were impressed and have been regular customers for 3 years about. They have a very extensive menu but we prefer to stick to what we love. We love the beef dip sandwich and the pastrami. French fries are excellent too. With the dip we can get either au jus or gravy. Normally choose the au jus but sometimes both. The beef dip is brisket. I love brisket. The sandwiches are just perfect in every sense of the word. The other food items are probably good based on what we had so far but we love the brisket dip and pastrami so much we don't want anything else there. My wife and I go to church in West Covina so on the way back from church we go to the JJ. We don't go all the time and have not gone for awhile, I mean JJ, not church. It's time we go again and say hi to David and Margaret. Sometimes we go when they are not there and that has been the case the past few times but now it's time we see them again because we enjoy talking to them.

I live right by this place and drive by it everyday going to work. I have not been here in years but when walking in, it was the same. I came with a group of friends before hitting Knott's Berry Farm last Saturday morning for breakfast. Everyone enjoyed their breakfast. Everything is reasonably priced. I cannot wait to come back again!

Based on the people who work here alone, i'd give it a 5. Overall, I'd give it a 3, but I gave it a 4 because I had fun, it's close to home, and it's always a good time when I go there. The workers are awesome people, seriously (at least in the bar half). As for the would-be 3, it's because they only have 2 beers on tap (bud light and coors light), the mixed drinks are not that great, the environment/decor isn't schnazzy, and the food is eh. But, like I said, it's fun with a group of friends just chatting, drinking, and catching up to have a good time :)

Very Nice owner. I didn't try their roast beef dip and that's what they were famous for. I had the steak and i think it was $15.99 but it wasn't what i expected but it wasn't bad. As for the food..I had better. Service * * * * Food * * ( $15.99 steak with hashbrown and soup.) Location * * *

When I came into this restaurant with high expectations, its been there since i can remember and I hardly ever see anyone in there (should have seen this as a sign) the place seems a little crouded although its fair in size, I think its because of the entrance the ceiling is really low. Well we ordered a hamburger and a chicken salad... this food seemed like I had cooked it. In other words terrible. The Chicken seemed straight from the freezer and it cost 7 dollars for frozen chicken and lettuce not just fresh lettuce, the lettuce you see in bags at food for less it was awful the hamburger was awful. Needless to say I will never go back to this restaurant again

I went in there for lunch, and was seated promptly. Lots of room in the restaurant. I noticed a large bar room/area adjacent to the entrance to the eating area. I ordered the BLT and my kid had the teriyaki sirloin steak. I was not too excited about my sandwhich. Left half of it on the table. My daughter said that her steak was ok, and i agree with her about the Jolly Jug. It's ok ... no harm no foul.

I have lived in El Monte for some time and I have always been curious as to what kind of a restaurant this was. Boy was I surprised. The food was great considering I was still numb from getting my teeth done. I ordered a burger with fries. The waitress was nice enough to give me a knife to cut my burger into smaller pieces since I only had half of my mouth to work with. My bill was about 6 bucks which was pretty reasonable for a burger and fries. I'd definitely come here to eat more often.

Great place to eat. The staff is quite friendly. More than a restaurant it also has a seperate area for a Bar/Pub. If you dont feel like a full meal but just a nibble and have some time to mess around try the bar. Or bring the family to lunch/dinner. Youll like it.

This is my favorite place to go for a pastrami dip sandwich (served with really good large pickles - yummy). Its a small local's restaurant on Peck Road. Service is good. We have ordered sandwiches both in the restaurant and for take out. Great place to go if you have a hankering for pastrami dip. Yum!

GO. my bf said that we should go try out this jolly jug place, and after i read the reviews, i'll be honest; i was worried. we walked in and waited for about 30 seconds and the cook saw us from the kitchen and prompted us to take a sit anywhere we like and rang the bell for the server. after we sat down, the server came and brought us menus and was VERY FRIENDLY. we both ordered the sandwiches. bf got the french dip and i got the reuben. we shared an order of onion rings. this is really good diner food. the cole slaw was amazing, probably the best cole slaw i've ever had. i really liked how they kept the food simple and no fuss. the place was clean, service was great. we will definitely go back. it's good. trust me.

Rating the Bar Area: The bar "doctors" are awesome! They pour you great drinks and the right amount. If you are looking for something new, they are always willing to suggest drinks to you. Simon is the man!!! (He was our bar tender) This is a great hole in the wall bar. NOT a place for a first date place but a place to bring your friends! Bar food was good, and the regulars at the bar are pretty chill.

This place has got to be the biggest disappointment I've ever had in a restaurant. I don't know if maybe I went on the wrong day or what. The only reason I decided to come here was because of the great reviews on here, but boy were they wrong! For onr, their "world famous beef dip" should not even be considered a beef dip! It was tasteless and they used gravy! (yes, gravy) as their dipping sauce. No choice of au jus sauce choice here. The amount of fries that they served on that plate looked like they were literally counted, I mean it wasn't even a hand full of fries. As for the waitress! She may have been the owner (short Asian lady) she was the most over bearing person ever! She brought us over ketchup and then asked why we were using any of it! When we were pitting put sandwiches in boxes to go she made sure we put every single scrap cause according to her "we shouldn't wast food". To sum it all up, bad service and terrible food! Save your money! Not worth it at all!!!

I've driven pass the Jolly Jug a number or times and it never occurred to me to try the place out until today at the suggestion of the man. The restaurant is very quaint and cozy with lots of regulars. When you enter there is a full service bar to your left and the restaurant is to the right. I love breakfast food so of course I got breakfast which is served all day. I got the sausage and eggs with hash browns. Just your basic breakfast food and hard to mess up, although it was on the oily side. The bf tried the rueben sandwich, which was amazingly delicious. The meat was sliced thin and piled high with a good helping of sauerkraut. The bread holding it all together was perfect. The service was great and the lady who we believe to be the owner was very attentive and gave us a tour of the bar after our meal. We'll be back to try their other sandwiches!

  • Stuart S.

My wife and I eat here often. We are 'regulars' by every meaning of the word. The food is amazing! I don't think we've tried anything we don't like yet. Restaurant side on the right for families, and the bar side on the left for folks interested in that. It took us a while to finally stop to check out the place, but we're glad we did. Be sure to try this spot out if you're in the mood for a great sandwhich!

Been only to the bar area so I really haven't experienced any of the food.. except for appetizer I ordered, which was the sampler (Shrimp, Wings, Mozzarella Sticks & Onion Rings).. average! Now for the bar, of course its a little hole in the wall but don't underestimate it. Mixed drinks are actually good there and not bad in price ($6) Male asian bartender is one the friendliest bartender I have come across. There's a jukebox with up to date music from Adele to 2Pac to Sublime.. so there's music for everyone!

I love a good pastrami! Me and my fiance ventured out to El Monte to try the famous Jolly Jug and we were not dissapointed. We really had a great time we enjoyed the food the owner is great and full of life and great stories. The bar is really cool and cozy the pickles were great and we even tried the chili, good stuff. If you havent been and you want to have a pretty good lunch check it out. When you order make sure you order everything you want on the side seperately the sandwiches don't come with fries so make sure you get all of that stuff in addition to your sandwich order. I'm looking forward to breakfast one day good little spot to have in your rotation. Check out the photos of the Jolly Jug on my profile.

This place is tits! One of the best bloody mary's around. There are quite a bit of menu options and every meal i have had here does not disappoint. It is not the classiest establishment, but the food is excellent (especially breakfast) and the price is right....not to mention they make homemade pickles that are A-MAZING!!! i wish the portions were larger at times, but other than that I will continue to come here as long as I can and recommend this place to everyone that wants to cure a hangover with a fabulous breakfast and bloody mary :)

I looooooooovvveee this place. I work in El Monte and it is soooo refreshing to eat at a place that is not of the Asian variety. I don't come here as often as I like (mostly because regular visits would result in a heart attack) but its definitely still one of the best spots in El Monte to go to. The place is located about a mile down Peck Road from the I-10. It has its own parking lot so parking is never a problem. When you enter the place, there is a bar to the left and the dining room to the right. I've been in the bar once to get a beer, and it was full for it being only 1 in the afternoon. Each time I've gone, the same waitress has served us. I forget her name but she always greet us with a smile and is always keen to offer us her suggestions. She also does a wonderful job of checking on us to see if everything is OK. One time we were having lunch, one of the owners came by to say hello and thank us for coming in. It was a really nice touch. The best part about this place is the food. The sandwiches are a bit on the expensive side, close to $10 per sandwich, but they are well worth it. The bread is the perfect combination between fresh and crispy. The meat is tender and the dips that you get are not overbearingly salty like a lot of other places. I've tried various things on the menu but the one thing I would recommend the most is the beef dip. The pastrami sandwich runs a close second though. The fries are merely average.

I really love a lot about this place. The bar is really cool, but the restaurant has a good variety of food. They have the yummiest homemade pickles. There Deluxe burger is very good and there salads are wonderful.

I want to give this place more stars, four or five, but I can't. The food just doesn't do it. Some of it is pretty good, but some is pretty mediocre. I want to like it more because of the crazy lady who served us, perhaps the owner's wife or relative, was thoroughly entertaining Ina crazy aunt kind of way. She told us how famous they are, and how their French dip is better than places like Phillipe and their pastrami is better that Canters or anyplace else in greater LA. All this on some nondescript corner in El Monte. Right. She served the French Dip with gravy instead of au jus. Really.

Jolly Jug Jolly Jugs Jolly Hooters Jolly Melons Jolly Knockers Jolly TaTa's Jolly Milk Cartons Jolly Mountains Jolly Guns And My All Time Favorite Jolly Boobies One of only a few diners left in El Monte. Came here on a Whim to eat. The food was just OK. I got the Beef Dip with Swiss. Comes with only Pickles. Jesus I gotta have fries with that. Wifey got BBQ Beef. 2 Sandwiches with helpings of pickles and 2 fires. $26.00 bucks. A little pricey for El Monte. They do have a smokey, smelly seedy bar attached to the restaurant. Oo I did tell someone they should apply there since they had a Help Add, Bartender needed. But the Jolly Guns will fit right in. wink wink! Overall I don't think I will come back here to eat. Feeling a little queezy since eating. Not gonna say it was the food. But who knows! Besides it was to pricey. I'd rather drive to Alhambra and get me a Beef Dip from the Hat. On another note! Wifey's are the Jolly Big Boobies Cheers!

The Jug is AWESOME! I am a big fan of their sandwiches, and the pickles. The service has always been outstanding, I love the fact that the restaurant isn't very crowded.

I give it 2 stars because the pastrami is pretty good but for $9.00 I would rather have 2 sandwhiches from the hat!!! I dont like that you have to order everything seperate a sanwhich a side of fries and a drink come out to like $16 to $17 its crazy...The chili cheese fries are like $6.00 alone and are small and gross! I love there ranch from the salad.. The reason I will not be returning is simply the last service. We had a restraunt.com certificate and she said sorry I had already cancelled it with them so its no good even thouigh we bought it an it wasnt expired she argued us about it instead of honoring it an taking it up with restraunt.com instead of her customers!

I am typically not a fan of cole slaw, but after reading some of the Yelp reviews I decided to order it. It was Amazebals!!! It wasn't your typical overly sweet slaw, but rather had a kick to it (maybe wasabi or horseradish) and was sprinkled with grated chesse. Definitely worth coming back to/

Tried the food and I wasn't too please. I'm normally easily pleased but the food wasn't simply is not good. Only came here after seeing the reviews. I was excited to try and new place but man I'm terrified now. I got the steak and it was well done when i asked for medium.. They don't know how to cook their steaks. The only thing good was the coke. The steam vegetables was nasty and the soup was bland. i had to stand there for awhile before being seated.

I've driven past the Jolly Jug on several occasions and you can't miss it as it's stands out in that neighborhood. It's has an old style coffee shop look with plenty of neon beer signs in the windows. Now, I for one can't keep passing a place that looks that cool without stopping in. When I first stepped in for lunch on a weekday, I noticed a small bar room off to the left with a TV. All the few bar stools were all taken by regulars from the way they all knew each other. Hmm.. a drinking lunch place that's truly authentic old school. Hey, then I notice that everyone working here seems to be asian which seemed strange to me. You know, old school drinking restaurant with all american menu your typical El Monte neighborhood. The waiter was a young asian dude who really nice and he told me about the menu items and told me the most popular item is the roast beef dip. I was starving and beef dip is one of my favorites so it was off to the races. The sandwich came with fresh cole slaw, pickles, and small bowl of gravy which is their au jus. It's on your typical french roll which was just right in terms of texture for dipping. The beef was moist and tender with no fat. I thought it could use slightly more meat as the sandwiches are not exactly cheap. If the restaurant was in a convenient location then maybe I'd drop by once in a while. Overall, it was good in an okay way in an okay place. Given that I won't be making a trip to come back as Philippes and Edwards (they have a great $6 dip for lunch) make far better sandwiches and are closer to me. I'd rather even drive to the valley for a roast beef at "The Dip" for a couple more bucks.

Came here last week to try the sandwiches and waited up to 5 mintues to get seated and nobody came so we left. This spot was empty and just a few patrons at the bar. Not sure if I would come back.

Great food, entertaining patrons and wonderful staff, bottled into a funky, great vibes location . Prices are fine when you take into consideration their portions (slightly larger) and their freshness (every time). A great place to find yourself on a random night.

My dad took me here a while back. He passed away a few years ago but he said then that he remembers coming here many decades ago and he said it hadn't changed a bit. When I make it back out to CA I will have a Pastrami and tip my hat to you dad.

Another vote for the beef dip, forget phillippes, this one is more tender and taste better.

Not the nicest dine-in experience because the restaurant could use a major face lift. However, my sole reason for visiting this place was the LA Weekly sign that read "Best French Dip in Los Angeles." It was! Much better the Philippe's in downtown. I think that says a lot. The end.

Growing up in the Chicago area I know a great Beef sandwich...I guessing this place was once a great place to eat but really you are going to serve beef gravy from a jar and call it a dip...where's the Au jus even better the bread was stale..my wife Barbeque Beef sandwich was OK atleast the sauce was good but for stating this is the "honored sandwich" place is a joke...ohh and 4.00 for 8 frozen onion rings sucked too

After another great night at the Jug, the hubby and I finally decided to give it a proper review so the whole world can discover the greatness that is Jolly Jug. This is hands down the best bar in the LA area... where everybody knows your name... and they're always glad you came. Amazing staff, great atmosphere and a great juke box. What more can you ask for?? DIVE right into to the Jug!

i been here more than a handful of times. their strong point and the reason why i come back is the reuben sandwich, in my humble opinion. they boast "the best dip sandwiches, but no, i'll pass. everything else on the menu is pretty standard. there's a full on bar too. i met the owner the 2nd time i went. nice feller, invited me to come over on a weekend night. i don't see myself ever drinking there, unless somehow zooey deschanel befriended me, made me her lover, then broke up with me. i'd need a place to suffer. heads up with the service. it's great. there's a young gal, i've got a few times. she's very attentive and good vibes. i need to get her name already. go reuben!

The Jolly Jug is an old school diner. Famous for their sandwiches, this place has been seemingly around forever. Beige Naugahyde booth adorn the small dining room. This is a mostly locals joint, where regulars often frequent. The Beef Dip is a large sandwich with loads of chopped beef on top of a French roll. The bread has a very thin, but super crunchy crust, while the interior is cottony soft. This is a straightforward sandwich, just meat and bread. What accompanies the sandwich is a different story altogether. Instead of au jus, a small bowl of gravy accompanies your sandwich for dipping. This is your standard brown gravy, but has a slight hint of something in the background, perhaps nutmeg. The beef was a little dry, but the gravy did its job in moistening the sandwich. The Pastramii Sandwich is unlike any that I have ever had before. The pastrami is not cured for a very long time, and has sort more of a brined flavor. This gives the meat a fresher, and somewhat saltier taste than your normal pastrimi. The meat is very lean and piled on high. As with the Beef Dip, the same gravy is served with the Pastrami. The Jolly Jug serves good food at a reasonable price, but more than anything is a bit of nostalgia.

French fries you get in the frozen aisle at the local Food 4 Less coupled with an overdone streak means this place is mediocre at best. What makes it worse is that they are cheap with their fries so you get about 15 fries as a side to a sandwich. Go ahead and give this place a shot if you'd like, it has after been in El Monte for longer than I remember. Just know that it is pretty much a low-budget (except for higher prices) Denny's. Maybe when they first opened they had some love and passion with food but now the love is dead and food and Jolly Jug don't even speak to each other in the morning.

I first started going to Jolly Jug when I decided I wanted to try some random places to eat. Even though my boyfriend was hesitant to try Jolly Jug out, he and I both enjoy the food there. We have been there now several times. My boyfriends favorite is the french dip and I still have yet to find a favorite, but everything I've tried has been good. The owner is also really friendly and fun to talk to. She seems to remember everyone who has eaten there and talks to everyone. The other side of the place has a bar that can get pretty crowded on the weekends, but I have yet to go to that side. Another perk of eating here is we are supporting our local business'

Just visited the birth place of the most honored sandwiches; the jolly jug. Having been to the famous dip eatery phillipe's and hating everything i had there this was good little suprise. My wife and I had the philly dip and the pastrami dip, and it was tasty. A friend of mine had the beef eater and that looked even better than the ones we had. I recommend it.

When friends invited me to breakfast at the Jolly Jug my mind flew back in time. My Dad had taken me there way back when it was old......So, with hesitation I agreed. Then read up on it here on Yelp. I could tell that it must have changed hands in the last eon and there was some hope. It was even older buy had been redone at some point. So, better than I thought. Now to the food. Out of the four of us no one had a complaint. We all had different breakfasts and they all came as ordered. (even though no pencil and paper were used!) I even got my Decaf and an extra helping of onions and peppers added to my country fries, just the way I like them. One of my friends loves everything a little too crispy. They made it her way, for her. We lingered over coffee. Had a lovely chat with one of the owners. All is well that ends well. It did. p.s. for the rest of the menu, they do have some veggie items also.

okay so i started going to the jolly jug a long time ago with my family. And ever since i first went there the food has been amazing. I love everything about this place from the atmosphere to the people. They have a wide selection of sandwiches which is the most popular thing to order on the menu. I absolutely love THE MIMI!!! it is the most original thing you can get there. It comes on a onion roll with coleslaw inside and also corned beef which sounds interesting but believe me its really good. Also I have two new favorites which are a must have when you go here which is the Philly beef and the fried rice. Now they are both newer items to the menu but both sensational. The Philly beef includes onions, green bell peppers and white cheese. it also comes with a dipping sauce which i always use since i like a more juicier taste. And also about the fried rice. There chicken fried rice is a typical kind of fried rice except for the fact it has a different taste than most of the fried rice i have had over the years. Whenever i go to the Jolly Jug i get the fried rice and a side salad which comes with ham bits and cheese on top with the house dressing which is a garlic ranch homemade dressing. Best combination to start off your meal. And also if you are interested in coming in for breakfast at anytime Jolly Jug has one of my favorites.Great pancakes and eggs : ) I hope this review is helpful and i hope you get to try the amazing food!!!!

My mom went here as a kid with her dad and my mom took me here for the first time. I must say, I liked it - a lot!! The service was awesome and what pastrami was WAY good. Veronica, had it right no about the pastrami - taste it really light but really good, doesn't leave the icky gross greasy feeling in your stomach that happens when you eat at that other place that goes on your head :)
